Lucky Tackle Box Review October 2018

Last month I absolutely destroyed Lucky Tackle Box (LTB) based on a series of factors (click HERE to read), but I decided to give the company a second chance. I paused my Mystery Tackle Box subscription for the month of October, received the Lucky Tackle Box instead, and this is the associated review.

The items in the box added for a total $30.95 based on the company’s descriptions, and I found that this was actually somewhat accurate (though a note on this later). Disclaimer; this review is based on quality on how well I think these baits would perform, and aren’t with real world experiences. Let’s proceed.

1.)    SAVAGE GEAR Bat - $13.99          ★★★★

IMG_0196.jpg

This topwater lure received the 2017 ICAST award for “Best Hard Lure”, though ICAST awards can be misleading. This is perhaps the most interesting bait I’ve ever held. It’s “wings” aren’t something that I’ve ever seen before, and I can imagine that they create an erratic “crawling” motion as the packaging advertises. The bait itself seems of decent quality – the paint is decent, the plastic seems sturdy, and the hooks are sharp. I will say that I would be nervous of breaking off the metal wings, as they’re attached using some metal pins. The packaging does mention that the wings will more than likely bend during a hard hook set, and that they can be bent back with ease. One thing I will mention is that LTB claims that this bait costs $13.99, but Tackle Warehouse is selling this bait for $19.99, so LTB gets some brownie points here. Overall I give this bait 4 out of 5 stars. If SAVAGE GEAR could find a way to make this bait more durable, I would have no problem giving this bait a 4.5, or even a 5.

2.)    STELLAR JIGS The Orbiter - $3.99               ★★★★★

IMG_0198.jpg

It’s sort of hard to give jigs bad reviews, as there’s only a couple of factors that can make them of poor quality, and those factors are eye placement, paint quality, paint durability, and weedgaurd quality. I don’t rate skirts when they’re removable because anyone, at any time, can remove, alter, or change them. With the STELLAR JIGS The Orbiter, everything is right. The eye placement is offset so as to prevent poor hooksets from right-angled-eye disturbance, and the paint job is done well and seems of high quality. With that said, it’s hard to say how high quality paint is without actually using the jig. This jig in particular is designed for heavy cover flipping or pitching, and carries a 3/4oz head for such. The weedguard is a perfect weedguard in my opinion; it’s not too thick and not too thin, and is the perfect length to raise hookset ratios while still remaining weedless. The hook itself is a Mustad, so it’s sharp and high quality. Overall, I have to give this jig 5 out of 5 stars, because it shines in the categories I mentioned.

3.)    BAMA BAITS Finesse Worm - $3.99          ★★★

The BAMA BAITS Finesse Worm is pretty much the same as most other finesse worms. The description basically says that finesse worms are invaluable in a tackle box, and will catch fish when most other baits won’t. Yes, this is true, but all finesse worms do this. They claim that this bait is infused with “BAMA FUEL”, which will trigger fish into striking. I can’t approve or deny this claim, but I will say that it smells the same as most other soft plastic baits. Overall, I give this bait 3 out of 5 stars – it’s nothing special, and is average.

4.)    Logic Lures Plastix - $3.99              ★★★★

IMG_0199.jpg

This is the one bait that surprised me in the box. I hadn’t heard of the company, and it seems as if some thought was put behind the creation of these baits. This soft plastic jerkbait is infused with anise and fish oil, making it so that there’s no messy liquid that needs to be dealt with within the package. The coloration looks good, and the overall plastic is high quality and the pattern looks good – except for one part. They claim the tail induces full-body movement, but I just don’t believe this. The tail is very stiff and has no ridges or flanges that would introduce movement, and is just a simple oval shape. Logic Lures, if you’re reading this, change your tail design to be thinner or with a flange and I think you’d have a winner. Overall, I give this bait 4 out of 5 stars.

5.)    Mustad Stand Up Shaky Head    ★★★★★

This is a unique portion of the box. These Mustad Shaky Head hooks are limited edition for the month of October in honor of breast cancer awareness. They have a pink ribbon the head of the jig, and come in a pink package from Mustad. The stand up shaky head jigs from Mustad are unbeatable. These particular ones are 1/4oz, have a 2x strong 3/0 hook, and come with 2 in a pack. I have no complaints about these razor sharp hooks. Overall, I give 5 out of 5 stars.

As mentioned, this LTB focused on breast cancer awareness, with the limited edition Mustad shaky heads. Along with this, the sticker was a pink ribbon that “I DONATED” – LTB is donating a portion of every box order to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I know this because of another unique portion of this box – they included a “Tackle Guide”, of which explains every bait that comes in the box, along with a few other letters to the consumer. I applaud LTB for this, as MTB does not do this.

I’m not going to lie, I liked this Lucky Tackle Box. I was underwhelmed by the finesse worms, but I liked all of the other baits. Overall, this month’s LTB scored 21 out of 25 stars, with an average of 4.2 stars per item, which is pretty dang good. I may give LTB another chance to redeem itself for next month…
